Walking sticks

Sapsucker stick.

When Rex is in the woods he frequently finds sticks that have interesting patterns or scars on them.  You may have noticed horizontal rows of holes in trees where you live, if so you have seen the beak-work of a Sapsucker.  Around here we have the   Red-bellied Sapsucker.

Sapsucker scars.

When we’re lucky enough to find a grove of alder that has a sapsucker we harvest any that have interesting scars and are sturdy enough to use as a walking stick.  Quite often the sapsucker gets a little over enthused and weakens the tree so that it eventually dies.

Send an email for pictures of the current sapsucker sticks that are available.

  Root

canes

Root canes are made from saplings that have one large surface root
that is suitable to serve as a handle.

Some of them, like the one with horses on it, have roots forming a knob and serve as a mid size walking stick or shillelagh.

Sometimes Rex gets a wild idea for a stick theme and brings it to fruition.  Here you see a stick with a western theme from the movie “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”.  The images are of Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Walloch.  Imagine the fun if you replaced Eli Walloch with a picture of a friend or relative and gave it to them as a gift!
